Guide covers Fundamentals / FI-CO Context

SAP FI-CO is the common shorthand for SAP Financial Accounting (FI) and SAP Controlling (CO). FI focuses on external financial reporting and statutory accounting. CO focuses on internal management accounting, cost tracking and profitability analysis.

FI-CA consultants do not need to treat FI-CO as a separate universe, but they do need the integration context. FI-CA is a subledger for high-volume contract accounts, and summarized FI-CA postings ultimately flow toward general ledger accounting.

Financial Accounting

SAP FI supports core accounting processes such as:

  • General ledger accounting
  • Accounts receivable and accounts payable
  • Asset accounting
  • Bank accounting
  • Financial close and statutory reporting

In an FI-CA landscape, FI is especially relevant for reconciliation accounts, company codes, posting periods, document transfer and general ledger reporting.

Controlling

SAP CO supports internal cost and performance management, including:

  • Cost center accounting
  • Profit center accounting
  • Internal orders
  • Profitability analysis
  • Allocations and settlements

FI-CA postings can carry account assignments such as business area, segment, profit center or other dimensions depending on design and configuration.

Why It Matters for FI-CA

FI-CA handles large numbers of business partner line items that would be inefficient to manage directly in classic accounts receivable. FI-CO provides the broader accounting and controlling context where those FI-CA postings are reconciled, summarized, reported and controlled.
